Title: a day without laughter is a day wasted
Rating: PG-13
Paring: Baekhyun/Chanyeol
Length: 3,400 words
Summary: Baekhyun does not like Chanyeol, Baekhyun does not like Chanyeol, no matter how hard his band members try to play Cupid. Baekhyun does not – fuck.
Authors Note: This fic was so hard to write since the prompt was so open to so many possibilities so I apologize for this is not one of my best works! I tried to incorporate the many things idols go through in this fic, so I hope it isn't all that boring. Gold star to P listening to me rant about my writers block!

"Here's the horrible truth, Chanyeol," the shorter male says, smirking as his friend leaned down, hands on knees and panting hard. "You, are not fit to be a dancer."

Chanyeol looks up at Baekhyun, trying to catch his breath. "It's hard being 6'1."

Baekhyun suddenly frowns. "Are you trying to make fun of my height?"

"If you're going to be making fun of my dancing, then yes."

Chanyeol thinks Baekhyun should give him some more credit. After all, the other members had already gone home and the two of them were still staying behind to practice the new dance for their comeback. In Chanyeol's opinion, there was too much to get done and in all honesty, he was pretty worn out. It was a tiring night. Chanyeol's legs were numb and he thinks Baekhyun must know this too because he turns off the music and gestures for him to get his bag.

"Let's go eat and call it a night."

Baekhyun's favourite restaurant is one down the street from SM Entertainment and it's practically deserted when they push past the doors. He supposes it does make sense since it waspast midnight. He's somewhat glad, anyways, considering there were no autographs to be signed or photos to be taken. Don't get him wrong; he loved the fans. He was just tired.

Did you see the get up the stylist noona put on Kyungsoo?" Baekhyun laughs, his eyes scrunching up. "His eyes practically had fire in them."

"The fans like to joke that he's planning world domination," Chanyeol adds. He pauses then slowly grimaces as he whispers: "How do you feel about..."

"I don't want to talk about it," Baekhyun interrupts, drinking from the glass of water. Chanyeol shrinks back and Baekhyun notices this as he had noticed Chanyeol was tired. He clears his throat and frowns. "It's you and me, Yeol. Let's face it, people always leave and when it comes down to it, you just have to know who's gonna be there forever."

Baekhyun hopes this makes the giant a little happier, or at least a little bit comforting. "You and me?" Chanyeol echos and Baekhyun nods.

"It's always gonna be you and me."

The waiter approaches them and he's around the same height Baekhyun is. He looks sleepy, tired and worn out and Baekhyun finds himself wondering if he looked like that himself. The waiter takes their order and returns to the kitchen, leaving Baekhyun alone with his best friend again.

Friendships were weird, Baekhyun thought as he watched Chanyeol play with a napkin on the table. Baekhyun has known him for what, four, five years now? Maybe even more. And Baekhyun, truth to be told, had a strong love for Chanyeol. Baekhyun shakes his head subconsciously. Only as a friend, though, because he's not a complete idiot and knows what happens when one best friend likes another best friend.

Besides, Baekhyun was pretty convinced Taeyeon noona was the love of his life.

"Taeyeon noona is not the love of your life," Jongdae is saying as he throws the bouncy ball to the ceiling and catches it when it falls down. Baekhyun spins around in his computer chair to glare at his bandmate and frowns. Jongdae doesn't even look in his direction.

"What do you know?" Baekhyun shoots and Jongdae scoffs.

"I know enough. I see the way you look at Taeyeon. It's just a petty puppy-eyed stare and you follow her around like one too." Jongdae pauses, looking over at his friend. "Not to, you know, offend you."

"Too late," Baekhyun mutters, turning back around to face his desktop. Baekhyun never thought of it that way but he would be lying if he said his friend's words didn't hurt. After all, Baekhyun had been ‘in love' with Taeyeon for a while now, and it was pretty clear they were to only be friends. Baekhyun stares at the lyrics he was writing, and frowns, saving before closing it.

"But," Jongdae continues and Baekhyun sighs, a bit disappointed this ‘pep-talk' wasn't done. "The way you look at someone else is completely different."

Baekhyun turns back around in his chair just in time to see the bouncy ball hit Jongdae square in the forehead. "Hm? What do you mean?"

Jongdae curses a few times, groaning as he picked up the ball from the ground. "Have you ever heard of best friend love?" Jongdae coos, smirking as he rubbed his forehead which was now beginning to turn red.

Baekhyun blinks. "That sounds like the dumbest thing I've ever heard." He stands up, stretching as Jongdae watches him make his way across the room. "But speaking of, I have to go meet Chanyeol to practice the new dance. He's still not getting it."

Jongdae raises an eyebrow. "Why on earth should Chanyeol ask you for help? Shouldn't he ask Kai or Sehunnie?" Jongdae pauses. "No offense, but you're almost as bad as Yeol himself."

"My dancing is passable," Baekhyun huffs, grabbing his bag as he opens the door.

Jongdae nods but Baekhyun knows he doesn't agree. "Well, have fun on your date," Jongdae says as Baekhyun shuts the door. Baekhyun had just enough time to see the cheeky grin Jongdae threw him before the door shut, closing the gap between them.

It's time like these where Baekhyun wonders if he's as annoying as Jongdae is.

"You're almost as annoying as Jongdae is," Kyungsoo is saying as the two of them walk towards the dance studio.

Baekhyun frowns. "Except, I'm better looking."

Kyungsoo scoffs as his phone rings. He groans, pulling it out and sighs when he reads the text messages. "Well, you and your better looking self is gonna have to walk the rest of the way to the studio alone. Suho is calling me in to work on my pitch for the album."

"Will we ever get a rest?" Baekhyun grimaces and Kyungsoo shrugs before waving and walking in the opposite direction. Baekhyun supposes dance practice with just Chanyeol shouldn't be too much of a hassle. It was originally supposed to be the two of them, along with Kyungsoo, Xiumin and Sehun but the other two had bailed and now Kyungsoo had singing…

"You're here!" Chanyeol leaps from the ground, grinning. In a way, he reminded Baekhyun of a puppy at home, waiting for the owners to come home. And Baekhyun meant that in the nicest way possible. Chanyeol frowns when he realizes Baekhyun's alone. "Where are the others?"

"Something came up," Baekhyun explains, setting his bag down on the ground next to Chanyeol's. "I don't even feel like dancing."

"Well lucky for you, I have Bruno Mars' new album." Chanyeol pulls out a CD cover and grins, popping the CD slot of the stereo open. They'd be dead if Lee Sooman happened to walk by and hear them so Baekhyun inches closer. Just a little bit. Just for the sake of their career. Chanyeol grins at him, showing his faded dimple before pressing play.

Nothing happens for while. It's silent and Chanyeol frowns, turning the volume even up higher but nothing but static echoed through the studio. Baekhyun scoffs. "Did you buy a broken record, Yeol?"

"No, I swear it was - " And the music suddenly blasts into the studio, at probably the max volume, causing Baekhyun to yelp and Chanyeol to jump and turn off the music. Baekhyun leans back, his heart pounding due to the sudden start and Chanyeol stares at the stereo with wide eyes.

Then Chanyeol laughs.

Baekhyun can't help but laugh too.

"You know, laughs are only contagious through people you feel connected to."

Baekhyun stares at Jongin, unamused as the scenery passes by in the window of the band's van. Usually, Baekhyun would expect this from Jongdae, Sehunnie and most of all, Chanyeol but Jongin was not someone Baekhyun had suspected. Jongin was the one who listened to Baek rant and helped him with dances; not tease him about Chanyeol.

"I don't like Chanyeol."

"I didn't say you did. I said you were connected," Jongin hums. Amazing.

"We're connected too," Baekhyun declares and Jongin shakes his head.

"No, we're friends. You know, brothers, bandmates. But connected? Nuh-uh." Baekhyun figures he should take offense but he just turns to the side and looks out his own window.

"We're about to film a variety show. Don't get me upset."

"Is that…a threat?" Baekhyun turns back to Jongin who laughs lightly. "It almost seems everyone knows how you feel about Chanyeol except for you."

"Never thought you'd be the one to start a scandal with me."

Jongin laughs again before closing his eyes, resting his head on the window. "Fine. Deny it."

Baekhyun's chest feels heavy as he sighs.

It seemed like all the members had gotten a new kick out of teasing Baekhyun about Chanyeol. Had Chanyeol told them something Baekhyun didn't know? Baekhyun shifts in his seat to turn around and look at the rapper who was sound asleep. Baekhyun would be asleep too but now he was bothered. What if Chanyeol did like Baekhyun?

Baekhyun immediately turns around in his seat and faces the front, listening to their manager hum their newest track.

Impossible. Baekhyun did not like Chanyeol. It was impossible to like Park Chanyeol.

In a way, Baekhyun supposes, it was impossible not to like Chanyeol.

He saw the way their fans treated Chanyeol, the way their sunbaenims looked at Chanyeol, and certainly the way the manager looked at Chanyeol. There was something about Chanyeol, annoying, bright and bubbly Chanyeol, that everyone was addicted to.

"Why are you staring at him like that?" Sehun cackles in delight. Baekhyun turns to look at Sehun, who was smiling brightly.

"Will you cut it out? There are thousands of cameras here," Baekhyun hisses through his smile as he waved at the several fans seated in front of him. "I don't want a fancam on Youtube later called ‘Baekhyun Stares at Chanyeol Adoringly While Sehun Teases'."

"That's an awfully long title for a video, don't you think?" Sehun makes a face as Baekhyun turns glaring at the younger male who cheekily grins. "Cameras," he calls out singsongily before waving at the crowd. Sehun drops his voice so only the two of them can hear and whispers, "besides, don't tell Yeol I'm telling you this, but the kid is crazy about him, you know."

Baekhyun takes a gulp of air. "Chanyeol is older than you. You shouldn't be calling him kid."

Sehun rolls his eyes. "Okay, fine. Hyung is crazy about you, hyung."

"Quit fooling around, Sehun." Baekhyun hates to admit it, but he feels his cheeks heating up so he takes a drink from his water bottle to cool down.

"But ah hah, I'm not fooling around for once in my life." Sehun giggles. "I think it's cute, you and Yeol. What do the fans call you? YeolHyun? YeolBaek? Baekyeol, that's it. There was another one too, what was it? Bacon and eggs!" Sehun lets out another cackle and beams, tapping his fingers on the table as he glances down the table at the fans approaching.

Baekhyun sighs deeply before taking another sip from his water bottle before looking at Sehun. "Please enchant me on why my dear band members think I have something for Park Chanyeol?"

It's Sehun's turn to sigh. "Hyung, I'd love to share my information for your inquires on why you dig that loser, but in all due respect I have better things to do then play Dr. Oz."

Baekhyun blinks. "Who the hell is Dr. Oz?"

Being the first one in the car after the fanmeeting, Baekhyun pulls out his phone and decides to figure out who Dr. Oz was. Surely, Sehun hadn't meant the Wizard of Oz, Dr. Oz? Despite the banging of fans on the window, Baek finds that Dr. Oz is a Turkish-American doctor who worked on the Oprah show. Figures Sehun would know who he was considering he was going through a Oprah phase, Baekhyun thinks to himself as he scrolls through the doctor's website. He comes to an video called Dr. Oz: What I've Learned From Love and pauses before putting his headphones on.

"Is it more important to be loved or to love?"

Dr. Oz laughs, and Baekhyun wonders how he ended up on such a video. "It's more important to give love. That is the healthier expression. Of course, it's great to receive love as well, but when you love someone, there's a spiritual centeredness that is very healthy. Also, to truly love you must be able to forgive and that is the healthiest of all."

Baekhyun is thankful for the Korean subtitles; he didn't catch much. "And, Dr. Oz, what is the hardest thing about love?"

"The hardest part is understanding and adapting to how you both change. People never stay the same – no relationship is static. You start out on – "

"What are you watching?"

Baekhyun jumps in surprise at the deep voice that had happened to climb into the car. "What took you guys so long?" Baekhyun asks, quickly detaching his headphones and shoving his phone into his pocket. Perhaps he would finish the video later. When there wasn't a giant sticking his nose in Baekhyun's business.

"Saesang fans," Chanyeol says nonchalantly, as the rest of the members board into the van, loud and noisy. He nods at Baekhyun phone which was already sealed in Baekhyun jacket. "What were you watching?"

"Some doctor," Baekhyun waves him off. "What'd they do this time?" Baekhyun asks, glancing at the several fans who were screaming their names while banging on the van window, despite the fact that the manager was pulling away.

"Tried to get Kyungsoo's scarf," Chanyeol sighs, shaking his head. "There's always the bad seeds. What doctor? Since when are you interested in medicine?" Chanyeol prods and Baekhyun sighs.

"Just this Turkish doctor. Sehun kept blabbering about him during the fanmeeting so I figured I'd check him out."

"Oh, Dr. Oz?" Baekhyun looks at Chanyeol in surprise who suppresses a deep laugh (which is pretty easy since Chanyeol's voice was already so deep. It was one of the things Baek liked about Chanyeol). "Sehun won't stop mentioning him to me either. He has some interesting stuff, you know. Dr. Oz, I mean."

"Oh, yeah? Like what?" Baekhyun hums, glancing out the window. It was hard to look Chanyeol in the eyes, nowadays.

Chanyeol shrugs, looking down at his lap as he fiddled with his fingers. "Just some stuff that'll make you think. Like things to help you look into your heart and stuff like that." Baekhyun looks over at Chanyeol, just a quick glimpse, and Chanyeol beams. "And some stuff to keep you healthy. Stuff like that.

"He must know a lot."

"Yeah."

And they rode the rest of the way to the dorm in silence, while the backseat was a booming party.

Baekhyun figures it wouldn't help anybody if they kept their awkward silence going.

The members felt awkward themselves when they were with Baekhyun and Chanyeol, and it felt as if the whole world knew what was happening. Even their manager made an effort of seating the two as far away from each other as possible.

But Baekhyun hated that. He missed Chanyeol's presence, and he wished, god he wished for the uncomfortableness between them to go away but he couldn't come up with a solution.

"There's one way, you know," Suho is saying when Baekhyun asks him for advice. "You could confess to him yourself."

"No way," Baekhyun scoffs. "I don't even like Chanyeol that way."

Suho sighs and he rubs his forehead, tired. "Stop being so childish, Baekhyun."

And that conversation lead to why Baekhyun was sitting in the hall, waiting for Chanyeol to finish his recording for the album. Baekhyun could faintly hear the rappers laughter inside and Baekhyun closes his eyes at the sound. It was currently 3AM, and the rest of the members were already at the dorm, most likely asleep. Baekhyun was supposed to be there too but his mind was racing and the only way to settle his heart was to come here. To Chanyeol.

It was cheesy, in a way, for Chanyeol to be the ‘calm to his ocean'.

"Baekhyun!"

Baekhyun jumps, glancing up at Chanyeol who towered over him. Chanyeol grins and Baekhyun gets to his feet, dusting off his pants but he knows he's stalling. "Hey, you finished recording?"

Chanyeol nods. "We have a sick track in our hands." Baekhyun laughs and Chanyeol does too. Then, it's silent in the hall again and Baekhyun figures, of course it is. Everyone else is already asleep. "So, what are you doing here? You should be sleeping," Chanyeol finally says, breaking the silence.

Baekhyun looks up at Chanyeol and really looks at him, tall and all. Chanyeol has a smile that's bright enough to outshine the stars, and eyes deep enough to call an ocean. Chanyeol is charming, with his cheeks and nose and everything in between from his eyebrows to his chin. Chanyeol is Chanyeol and Baekhyun figured, he wouldn't have it any other way.

"I was waiting for you," Baekhyun says, remembering Chanyeol had asked him a question.

Chanyeol cocks his head to the side. "You didn't need to. It's so late. You're probably tired."

"It's okay, something was bothering me so I needed to tell you." Baekhyun clears his throat and stands a little taller (but that didn't make much of a difference being next to Chanyeol). "I know how you feel about me and at first, I didn't want to admit I felt the same because fuck, you're Chanyeol. You're my best friend and fuck, who doesn't love you?" Chanyeol doesn't say anything; he just stares at Baekhyun, blinking those big damn eyes of his. "So, I tried to push you away and that was the most stupidest fucking move because now I miss you a whole ton even though you're right in front of me, and I wonder how you can miss someone when they're beside you and I realise you're not beside me. You're here but you're not and all I want is my best friend back."

Baekhyun feels like his chest is lighter. Like the air is easier to breathe, and the weight on his shoulders were gone. But when he sees Chanyeol's expression, his chest tightens again and he's feeling like he was two minutes ago: sick.

"You…like me?" Chanyeol finally says and Baekhyun swallows the foam that was growing in his mouth. Baekhyun nods, slowly and takes a deep breath.

Then, Chanyeol laughs.

"Wow, who would have thought. Byun Baekhyun and Park Chanyeol. Dating."

"Wait, what?"

"When two people like each other, they date, don't they?" And Chanyeol ruffles his hair, making Baekhyun grimace. "Oh, unless, you don't."

"N-no!"

Chanyeol laughs again and Baekhyun's cheeks flush red. "Wow, Mr. Cool Byun isn't as cool anymore, is he?" Chanyeol laughs again and Baekhyun feels his own lips curve. It was good to see Chanyeol laughing. "It's odd you knew though. Was I being that obvious?"

Baekhyun smiles weakly. "Ah, don't tell Sehun but he told me how you felt about me."

Chanyeol makes a face. "Sehun? I never told anyone how I felt about you."

Baekhyun raises his eyes, surprised. "What? But – "

Chanyeol laughs for what seems like the fifth time that night and leans down, close to Baekhyun's face. "Let's just leave that for another night."

And then Chanyeol kisses him.

And when Baekhyun pulls away, Chanyeol kisses him again. And again, and again.

And when Chanyeol pulls him into the recording studio that he had left five minutes earlier, Baekhyun doesn't complain or resist. Instead, Baekhyun makes sure to lock the door and kisses Chanyeol himself.
